Hunters in New York killed more than 253,000 white-tailed deer during the 2020 deer hunting season, an overall 13 increase from the previous year, according to the state Department of Environmental Conservation’s annual harvest estimate.
The results, which are reflected in the DEC’s recently released 2020 White-Tailed Deer Harvest Summary report, bodes well for the agency’s statewide deer management goals and initiatives, according to Jeremy Hurst, the DEC’s big game unit leader.

It’s official. New York has a new state-record non-typical archery buck. Bowhunter Phillip Pless arrowed the 18-point drop-tine behemoth on November 8th, and the rack was officially scored and declared a new record late last month. And Pless wasn’t the only whitetail hunter to arrow state-record buck in New York last season. Another bowhunter killed a 197-inch typical buck…on Long Island. You can read the story of that deer on

The hunting world is still buzzing over the new state non-typical archery buck tagged by Phillip Pless of Newfane (see Feb. 15 issue of
New York Outdoor New). If you are a big game hunter and you missed the announcement of this spectacular trophy, the Pless buck is an amazing mass of bone that was recently certified as the top set of antlers in New York. The final score was a gross measurement of 221-3/8 and a net score of 214-2/8 inches. Whoa!
It was not just measured by one official scorer. There was a panel of three judges that worked together to come up with a final number that they all agreed upon. I was there and I witnessed the difficulty of the task at hand. Don Haseley, of Sanborn, Dave Muir, of North Tonawanda, and Jeff Wetzel, of Lockport, were the trio involved in this history-making Niagara County beast. Haseley even admitted it was the most difficult set of antlers that he has ever had to score.
A hunter broke records in six states in one day.
New York resident has officially been recognized as having shot the largest non-typical buck in the state’s history. Even better, the organization that recognized the record also oversees multiple states, including New Jersey, Pennsylvania and the six New England states.
Phillip Pless shot the 18-point buck on private land in Niagara County in early November, New York Upstate reports. The buck recently received its official score from the New York State Big Buck Club and Northeast Big Buck Club.
The buck’s antler’s received a final gross score of 221 3/8 inches and a final net score of 214 2/8 inches.
