Jim Benning said he would be aggressive, but I’m not sure anyone expected him to be this busy.
Benning made a flurry of moves on the first day of free agency today, most notably inking Travis Hamonic and Tucker Poolman on defence, Jaroslav Halak in goal, and Brandon Sutter on forward.
But it doesn’t stop there.
Aside from signing those four players, the Canucks announced the signing of 12 more depth players, with some likely to start in Vancouver and others destined for Abbotsford, including the re-signing of forward Justin Bailey to a one-year, two-way contract. The Abbotsford Canucks promise to be a very strong team next season, with a number of players with NHL experience likely to suit up for the new AHL team.

Toronto – The NHL would like fans to be talking about Connor McDavid’s push for a 100-point season or focusing on Auston Matthews’ bid for 40 goals, but they’re not.
The topic that has the hockey world in a lather right now is the Washington Capitals’ Tom Wilson, a tank of man with a Grim Reaper reputation, tossing around the New York Rangers’ Artemi Panarin an MVP candidate like a rag doll.

The Rangers and Capitals combined for 72 penalty minutes in the first 4 minutes, 14 seconds of their game Wednesday night, their first meeting since Washington forward Tom Wilson injured New York star Artemi Panarin earlier this week in the same building.
There were six separate fights to start the game at Madison Square Garden, including a line brawl one second after the opening faceoff. The Capitals defeated the Rangers, 4-2, in a game that ended up with 141 penalty minutes. I definitely think we felt the need to take matters into our own hands a bit, Rangers center Ryan Strome said. I thought it was a great response. And hats off to them for answering the bell. They knew our frustration. We solved it and played the rest of the game.

An emotional TJ Oshie, scored a hat trick Wednesday as the Washington Capitals defeated the New York Rangers 4-2 in a fight-filled clash that featured fireworks from the opening faceoff.
The two East Division rivals combined for a total of 141 penalty minutes in the their second game in just three nights as there were six fights in the first 4:14 of play, including three off the opening faceoff.
