After a dip in pre-kindergarten and kindergarten enrollment while schools were closed during the COVID-19 pandemic, Montgomery County Public Schools is hoping for a rebound in the fall.
During this academic year, now-retired MCPS Superintendent Jack Smith routinely reported a decline in the district’s enrollment, mainly in the lowest grades. When the district’s official enrollment was recorded in September, it had dropped nearly 3% (about 4,700 students) to 160,564 students.
At the time, Smith said he expected the district’s enrollment to rebound when normal in-person classes resume.

School board to hear work group recommendations about SROs
The Montgomery County Board of Education will meet on Tuesday to hear recommendations from a work group tasked with reviewing its school resource officer program and discuss school reopenings.
Some board members will attend the meeting, scheduled to begin at 1 p.m., in person while others will log on virtually.
Along with the school reopening discussion, now a standard part of each meeting, the board will consider the recommendations from the SRO work group it convened last summer.

The Grand Forks School Board on Monday, April 26, spent a fair amount of time discussing the possibility of delaying a referendum election planned for June 22, but ultimately opted to move forward and ask voters to approve the $86 million bond and 10-mill increase.
While there seems to be broad public support for the 10-mill levy increase for the school district s building fund, there’s confusion about how the $86 million would be used, several board members said.
