It s a good thing the school year is almost over: The latest report from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment lists 58 new COVID-19 outbreaks at K-12 schools, the most in a single week since the department began releasing weekly outbreak lists over a year ago. Of the 859 outbreaks currently under active investigation by the CDPHE, K-12 schools account for 251, or just over 29 percent of the total. That appears to be a record, too. The CDPHE considers an entity an outbreak after two or more COVID-19 cases among residents, staffers or other people connected to a specific location are confirmed within a fourteen-day period, or two or more cases of respiratory illness with an onset of symptoms within a fourteen-day period are paired with at least one additional COVID-19 diagnosis. The vast majority of businesses and facilities identified as outbreaks remain open while working with the department to monitor symptoms and prevent future infections. ....

At 10 a.m. Friday, the state reported 76 people with the virus were being hospitalized in the state s fifth RMCC, which includes Clinton, Des Moines, Henry, Iowa, Jackson, Jefferson, Johnson, Keokuk, Lee, Muscatine, Scott, Van Buren, Wapello and Washington counties, as well as 22 patients in the region s intensive care units. The region last peaked at 371 hospitalized patients on Nov. 18 and 19, and 102 in its ICUs on Nov. 19. Officials reported 348 COVID-19 patients hospitalized across the state Friday morning, including 66 in ICUs; the previous highs were 1,527, reported Nov. 18, and 288, reported Nov. 17. Three of Iowa s 99 counties were reporting 14-day positivity rate averages of at or higher than 15%. Officials report a total of 4,975 people with COVID-19 have died from the disease across the state, including 63 in Johnson County. The death reported Wednesday was the first this week after five were reported Sunday, for a total of 10 reported here last week and 15 in the month of January. The county s first was reported April 4. Deaths reported are not deaths that have occurred within the past 24 hours, but only represent deaths that were added to the IDPH dashboard within the past 24 hours. It often takes more than a week or even two or three for a death to be added to the IDPH dashboard after a person has died. ....
