U-Roy's Burial Slated For May 19 At Dovecot Memorial – DancehallMag

Late veteran toaster Ewart ‘U-Roy’ Beckford will be buried at Dovecot Memorial on Wednesday, May 19. There will also be a viewing at Perry’s Funeral Home for the
Wear You to the Ball singer beginning Monday, May 17 so that the public can say their final farewells to the beloved singer.
The burial will be at 1 pm on Wednesday.
“I want to thank Minister Olivia Grange for her help in organising the viewing and the arrangements. We understand that the COVID-19 restrictions caused this long delay and at this moment, we are just grateful that we can send him off in dignified manner befitting his status in Jamaican music,” Daddy U-Roy’s partner of forty-plus years, Marcia Smikle, told ....

Of the many innovations Jamaican music has offered to the world over the past 50 years, the lyrical art of “toasting” has had perhaps the most profound and long-lasting impact. A stylised, poetical form of chatting and scatting, it was brought to prominence in the early 1970s by the reggae deejay U-Roy, who has died aged 78, and has fed into many musical forms, from hip-hop to grime.
U-Roy – whose real name was Ewart Beckford – did not actually invent toasting: that distinction is usually given to his fellow deejay Count Machuki, who began talking over songs at Jamaican sound system dances in the late 50s. But it was U-Roy who took it on by leaps and bounds, and it was he who successfully brought it into the recording studio, popularising the artform first in Jamaica and then around the globe. ....

U Roy's body to lie in state at National Arena

Late veteran toaster Ewart U Roy Beckford will be buried on March 28 and his body will lie in state at the National Arena on March 25 so that the public can say their final farewells to the beloved singer.
Minister Olivia Grange is organising the viewing which will take place on March 25th at the National Arena. He will have to go to Dovecot as they are not burying anyone else in National Heroes Park, U Roy s partner of 40-plus years, Marcia Smikle, told
