12 people have died riding their bikes in San Diego County this year, what bike advocates say need to change

SAN DIEGO COUNTY, Calif. This year,12 people have died on our roads in San Diego County while riding their bikes. The San Diego County Bicycle Coalition said these deaths are preventable and they’re calling for more bike-friendly infrastructure across the region.
“We are here today to comfort one another in the aftermath of yet another preventable death of someone killed while biking,” said former San Diego City Planning Commissioner Vicki Granowitz.
Local leaders were on hand Wednesday for the opening of the Rose Creek Bikeway, a multi-use path between the Rose Canyon Bike Path in University City and the Rose Creek Bike Path in Pacific Beach.
Together, the Rose Creek Bikeway and the Mid-Coast extension of the UC San Diego Blue Line Trolley represent a significant step toward realizing the Vision for SANDAG s 2021 Regional Plan, Blakespear said. These projects will provide real alternatives to driving alone, helping people connect to major destinations and activity centers around the region while reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
The Rose Creek Bikeway is intended to provide a safe option for people to bike or walk between points north such as Sorrento Valley, University City and UCSD, and points south including Mission Bay, Pacific Beach, Mission Valley and downtown San Diego.

San Diego Association of Governments Chair and Encinitas Mayor Catherine Blakespear joined San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria, Council President Jennifer Campbell, bike advocates and community leaders to open the bikeway, which fills a two-mile gap in the Regional Bike Network as part of the Coastal Rail Trail.
The bikeway was constructed concurrently with the Mid-Coast extension of the UC San Diego Blue Line Trolley.
SANDAG Chair and Encinitas Mayor Catherine Blakespear joined Vista Mayor Judy Ritter, SANDAG Executive Director Hasan Ikhrata and San Diego County Bicycle Coalition Executive Director Andy Hanshaw during the virtual ribbon-cutting ceremony on SANDAG s Facebook page. Adding miles to bikeways is so important as people bike and walk more than ever during the pandemic, Blakespear said. We can make great strides as a community to reduce our impact on the environment and play a part in our region s effort to meet our greenhouse gas emission reduction goals by offering residents healthy, safe, and viable transportation choices.
The latest completed phase includes a 2.5-mile section between Cherimoya Drive in the unincorporated county and Mar Vista Drive in Vista, and a half-mile section between North Drive and North Melrose Drive in Vista.
