It’s been a while since I’ve seen people’s full faces. Now, walking down the street, I find myself doing a double take. It’s made me realize how much I miss seeing people laugh and smile and the joy that it brings me. This week, I have rounded up some events both virtual and in-person that are sure to make you smile, from a history lesson on music to a digital experience emphasizing the restoration of Black joy.

Take a virtual trip through history with Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops to learn more about the history of jazz and its roots in New Orleans. This event is meant to more deeply explore the influences of the genre, including Scott Joplin, known as the “King of Ragtime,” and James P. Johnson, who composed “The Charleston,” which inspired a well known dance. A bit later in the show, the Pops will showcase the music of George Gershwin, Duke Ellington and Benny Goodman artists who brought the genre to a wider audience.

The first-ever Roxbury Poetry Festival will take place Saturday, June 5. The hybrid event will feature workshops, readings, an in-person outdoor poetry slam and a femme rap concert.
Boston’s Poet Laureate, Porsha Olayiwola calls herself the “dreamer of the festival,” rather than its director. I ve been dreaming this up with a lot of people and working with folks to take the dream and make it into something that s real and tangible and feels good, she says. Her aim for the festival is to debunk the notion that poetry is an elitist art form that belongs within the confines of academia.

Just like everything else this year, Lawrence’s student-run music festival will look different from years past (and hopefully, from years to come). In recent years, the festival has hosted over a dozen traveling performers on the quad over Memorial Day weekend, supported by additional performances by Lawrence students.
One big change this year is the festival’s partnership with the Committee on Diversity Affairs (CODA). The student group approached the LUaroo organizers, the Band Booking Committee (BBC), for advice when they wanted to create their own music festival highlighting BIPOC and LGBTQ+ artists. The two student groups then saw the opportunity to combine forces, leading to this year’s lineup featuring
