Converted Texas prison gets first immigrant detainees as Gov. Greg Abbott’s border security effort ramps up KXXV Posted at 6:18 PM, Jul 25, 2021 and last updated 2021-07-25 19:19:56-04 A Texas prison has officially started detaining immigrants accused of state crimes after allegedly crossing the U.S.-Mexico border illegally as part of Gov. Greg Abbott’s heightened border security efforts. The Texas Department of Criminal Justice said Wednesday that Val Verde County, home to Del Rio, sent three people arrested under Abbott’s border initiative Tuesday to the Briscoe Unit in Dilley, a small town between San Antonio and Laredo. The number of detainees is expected to grow rapidly; the Val Verde county attorney predicted about 50 arrests of immigrants a day, ramping up to as many as 200 daily by August.

Friends, family celebrate the life of Addison Smith

Chris Dillmann/cdillmann@vaildaily.com EDWARDS Addressing a crowd that filled the gymnasium Saturday at Battle Mountain High School, author Lance Witt said that words seem hollow when remarking on the death of a 20-year-old who impacted the lives of hundreds. But as Witt and others learned in preparing for the celebration of life for Addison Smith, the beloved local left behind plenty of her own words from which to draw inspiration for the event. Smith was a Battle Mountain High School Class of 2019 graduate who completed two years of college at Baylor University in Waco, Texas. She was killed in a car accident June 30 while returning from Lake Powell with her family and friends.
