The family of Mr. Norman Ray Weir are deeply saddened to announce his passing at the age of 76 on Sunday, February 14, 2021 in St. Joseph s Hospital, Thunder Bay, Ontario.
Born in Toronto August 11, 1944, Norm grew up on the family farms in Markham and West Gwillimbury. He attended Bradford District High School. Throughout his life, Norm loved travelling and meeting new people. He would strike up a conversation with just about anyone.
In 1971, Norm met his future wife, Eila Määttä, on the beach of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. A long-distance relationship flourished and they married in December 1972. In 1974 they welcomed their daughter, Yolanda. Having spent the first years in Toronto, the family moved to Bond Head, then to Lefroy and eventually settling in Oro township near Barrie, Ontario. In 2010, Norm and Eila moved to Thunder Bay to be closer to their daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren.
BARRIE, ONT. The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit (SMDHU) reports 62 COVID-19 cases Friday, for a weekly total of 321. The health unit lists 17 people in the hospital with the virus and 448 active cases across Simcoe Muskoka. Four people died with COVID-19 this week, including two at Georgian Bay General Hospital, where staff are battling a stubborn outbreak of the virus. The recent virus-related deaths bring the region s death toll to 58. Along with the Midland hospital, there are nine other institutional outbreaks listed by the health unit. Eight of those are in seniors homes, while one is at the Central North Correctional Centre in Penetanguishene.
BARRIE, ONT. Education Minister Stephen Lecce told school board chairs to encourage staff and students to bring essential learning materials home over the holidays. In his Tuesday memo, Lecce said that the precaution would help the education system be ready for all scenarios. He says the government is eyeing an increase in hospitalizations and ICU admissions from COVID-19. The public health environment in Ontario continues to evolve rapidly. The government is continuing to monitor the COVID-19 situation, including recent trends in hospitalizations and intensive care unit patients, Lecce said. There are seven schools in Simcoe County with active outbreaks as of Thursday, including a new outbreak at St. Mary s Catholic School in Barrie.
BARRIE, ONT. The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit reports the region s fifth virus-related death in just seven days, bringing the COVID-19 death toll to 58. The health unit listed 58 new COVID-19 cases Thursday, with 15 of those in the hospital. Most of the cases recorded in the last 24 hours remain in the region s top three hotspots, Barrie, Bradford, and New Tecumseth. Two are reported in Muskoka. The health unit also lists 10 institutional outbreaks across the region, eight of which are seniors homes. Georgian Bay General Hospital in Midland is battling a stubborn outbreak that claimed two lives. The hospital currently has 10 patients infected, plus one visitor who was a high-risk contact of a COVID-19 patient.
BARRIE, ONT. The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit (SMDHU) reported the region s 57th COVID-19-related death Wednesday. The health unit says a woman in her 80s becomes the fourth person to die with COVID-19 in the past week alone. On Tuesday, a man 35 to 44 died at the Muskoka Algonquin Health Centre. On Monday, a man in his 80s died at Stevenson Memorial Hospital in Alliston and on Thursday, a woman, 65 to 79, died at Georgian Bay General Hospital in Midland. The health unit listed 52 new cases, including 17 people who are in the hospital. There are currently 401 active COVID-19 cases across Simcoe Muskoka, with most residing in Barrie, Bradford West Gwillimbury, New Tecumseth, Essa, and Innisfil.
