BRADFORD’S new Lord Mayor was handed his chains of office on the stage of the Alhambra Theatre today. Manningham Councillor Shabir Hussain took on the role at the first physical meeting of Bradford Council since March 2020. But with no room in City Hall able to accommodate all 90 councillors, as well as officers, press and Council staff, the event was held in the Council owned theatre. At the meeting Cllr Hussain paid tribute to the heroes of the Covid 19 Pandemic, including the NHS staff who cared for him when he was struck down with the virus. Cllr Hussain (Lab) has been Deputy Mayor for the past two years. He takes over from Councillor Doreen Lee, who was Lord Mayor for an unprecedented two years after the pandemic led to last year’s Mayor Making ceremony being cancelled.

The Prime Minister insisted the Government “did everything that we could to minimise suffering and minimise loss of life in this country as a result of the pandemic”.
But he faced questions over why, when in April last year 20,000 deaths was described by the Government s chief science adviser, Sir Patrick Vallance as “a good outcome”, the grim figure now stood at five times this.
Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer called the milestone a “national tragedy”.

He said: “We must never become numb to these numbers or treat them as just statistics. Every death is a loved one, a friend, a neighbour, a partner or a colleague. It is an empty chair at the dinner table.”
Both Shipley and Keighley could get up to £25 million funding
KEIGHLEY and Shipley are preparing bids for up to £25 million in Government funding. However, concerns have been raised that the “compromised” time scale provided to draw up the Town Plan priorities had left some groups struggling to get their submissions completed in time. In Late 2019, shortly before the General Election, the Government announced a number of towns across the UK that would benefit from its Towns Fund - meaning they would be have access to up to £25m for projects to regenerate the area. A Towns Fund board, which included local business leaders and councillors, was set up to draw up plans on where the money could go, and local groups were invited to make suggestions.
