Ohio Deputy Who Shot Casey Goodson Also Is a Pastor Who Used Christianity to Justify a ‘Righteous Release’ Use of Force Behind the Badge
Ohio SWAT deputy Jason Meade has yet to speak publicly about the Dec. 4 incident that culminated tragically with him shooting Casey Christopher Goodson Jr., a 23-year-old Black man, dead outside his Columbus, Ohio, home.
But during a midsummer interview in 2018, Meade provided insights into his psyche as a 17-year veteran of the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office. The comments came to light Tuesday in a story originally reported by The Columbus Dispatch.
Meade, who pastors a small Ohio church, talked about how he aligned his job as a law enforcement officer with his faith. He also shared his thoughts on use of force.
When Casey Goodson Jr. mused about his future, the 23-year-old talked about how he wanted his life to be more than ordinary; he wanted to make an impact on the world, his family and friends said.
Goodson died Dec. 4 after he was shot by a Franklin County Sheriff s deputy while entering his Northeast Side home.
At his funeral Wednesday at First Church of God on the Southeast Side, his family and others said they will make sure his life isn t ordinary. I believe Casey s purpose is to change the world, his mother, Tamala Payne, said from the pulpit. I believe Casey s name will save many other Black and brown boys who are not safe from the racist police, I believe my son s name will ring across the mountains …
Franklin County Corner Dr. Anahi M. Ortiz ruled Casey Christopher Goodson Jr.’s death a homicide, she announced in a statement Wednesday.
Jason Meade, a Franklin County Sheriff’s deputy assigned to a U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force, shot and killed Goodson outside his family home in northern Columbus, Ohio, on Dec. 4.

An autopsy was performed Tuesday and Ortiz released preliminary findings from the medical examination, which show that the 23-year-old Black man died from multiple gunshot wounds to his torso, although the report did not clarify whether Goodson was shot from behind, as his family has claimed.
