As the city of Memphis assumes control of the COVID-19 vaccination process in Shelby County, city officials said the transition has so far been seamless and, for now, residents will not need to do anything differently to get access to the vaccine.
Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland said on Thursday morning, Memphis Fire Department personnel transported more than 6,000 vaccine doses to eight sites for distribution, including two sites specifically for teachers.

Due to waste and inefficiencies, the state of Tennessee is cutting the Shelby County Health Department out of the vaccine distribution process and will instead send doses to the city of Memphis, local hospitals and pharmacies.
The Tennessee Department of Health said the county wasted a total of 2,400 doses across seven separate incidents over the month of February. Spoilage of that magnitude could also trigger a federal investigation, state officials said.

A day after Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee refused to mandate masks while Tennessee deals with one of the worst COVID-19 outbreaks in the nation, Shelby County Mayor Lee Harris wrote a letter to the mayors of every county in West Tennessee. It would have likely helped us a great deal to see more interventions at the state level and, like many of you, I have repeatedly encouraged state officials to implement a state-wide mask mandate, Harris wrote. However, in the absence of state action, I believe we have got to step up together as a region. . I am writing now to ask that each of you who do not currently have a mask mandate to please implement one.
