Vermont Business Magazine Representatives Peter Welch (D-Vermont) and Mike Simpson (R-Idaho), and Senators Tammy Baldwin (D-Wisc.) and Jim Risch (R-Idaho) today re-introduced bipartisan legislation that requires the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to take enforcement action against manufacturers labeling non-dairy products as dairy.
The DAIRY PRIDE Act would stop the use of dairy terms such as milk, yogurt and cheese on the labels of non-dairy products made from nuts, seeds, plants, and algae. The legislation does not prevent the sale of non-dairy products, only their mislabeling as dairy products.
“Dairy farmers, already struggling to survive, are facing a growing threat due to the misleading practice of marketing plant-based products as milk and dairy products,”

After months and months of stalled talks and failed deal-making, yesterday leaders in the House and Senate finally agreed to a new stimulus package to help the nation in the midst of the pandemic. Included in the $900 billion pandemic relief bill is $15 billion in aid for independent music venues and movie theaters. This was in part motivated by the Save Our Stages act and the efforts of the National Independent Venue Association (NIVA), which was formed this year as COVID-19 took hold. Music venues can’t properly and safely operate during a pandemic, but still have operating costs and often have rent to pay. In many parts of the country movie theaters are closed and those that are open don’t have many enticing new films to play (and many people are understandably nervous about going to an indoor movie theater with strangers right now). NIVA Testifies Before Congress To Lobby For #SaveOurStages: WATCH LIVE @ 10 AM ET TODAY
Adam Hartke, co-chair of The National Independent Venue Association (NIVA) Advocacy Committee and owner of WAVE and The Cotillion in Wichita, Kansas will testify before the Senate Committee on Commerce today, Tuesday, Dec. 15th at 10 AM ET.
The hearing by the Subcommittee on Manufacturing, Trade, and Consumer Protection will look at the impact of the COVID-19 shutdown on the live entertainment industry including artists, venues, and related industries.
NIVA has advocated for a series of measures that would offer a financial lifeline for the live events industry, including the Save Our Stages Act.
