WASHINGTON â What does a wave of legislation targeting transgender children in state houses across the country have in common with the recent furor among Republicans over âcancel cultureâ and Dr. Seuss?
More than you might think â at least according to LGBTQ rightsâ advocates, who are working to fend off the bills.
They argue that Republicans are targeting transgender youth now as a way to score political points with a segment of their base at a time when the party is out of power at the federal level and squabbling over some of the fundamental policies that used to unite them â from fiscal conservatism
Congress Can Affirm LGBTQ+ Students by Passing the Equality Act

On Feb. 25, the House passed sweeping protections for the LGBTQIA+ community in the form of H.R. 5, commonly cited as the Equality Act. The Equality Act amends the Civil Rights Act, extending protections against discrimination on the basis of sex, gender identity, and sexual orientation. The bill, which passed with a bipartisan majority of 224-206, would implement the first federal protections for LGBTQ+ citizens in our nation’s history, should it survive the Senate and land on President Biden’s desk.
The House vote spurred an office feud between legislators as Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), an outspoken opponent to the civil rights legislation, clashed with the occupant of the office across the hall from her’s, Representative Marie K. Newman (D-IL), a supporter of the legislation who has a trans daughter.
Congresswoman Newman, whose daughter is transgender, spoke in favor of the bill banning discrimination against LGBTQ Americans.

Congresswoman Greene tried to block the bill, so Newman responded by raising a transgender pride flag outside her Capitol Hill office, which happens to be right across the hall from Greene s.

“Our neighbor, @RepMTG, tried to block the Equality Act because she believes prohibiting discrimination against trans Americans is ‘disgusting, immoral, and evil.’ Thought we’d put up our Transgender flag so she can look at it every time she opens her door,” Newman tweeted, with a video of her putting on the flag.
This came in response to Greene, the controversial, right wing, QAnon-supporting lawmaker, calling the LGBTQ rights bill, “an attack on God’s creation.” The Equality Act, currently being debated in the house, is a bill designed to ban discrimination in the US based on sexual orientation or gender identity.
