Express News Service ROURKELA: Going beyond their call of duty, Sundargarh Police has decided to extend a helping hand to the elderly citizens living alone in the district. Senior citizens of the district can now call the police to seek help with medicines, food and other essentials as and when required.   Earlier this week, police created a database of elderly persons at Sundargarh, Rajgangpur and Birmitrapur towns. Police visited the houses of senior citizens to provide them identity cards and information on the police helpline which they can call during an emergency.  Saroj Kumar Patel, a retired government college faculty member, stays alone with wife Rekharani at Maheshdihi at Sundargarh town. His son Ishwar works in New York, while daughter Puja is married at Melbourne in Australia. In wake of the rising cases,  Patel said that he feels unsafe to step out of his house to procure medicines and essentials.

Express News Service ROURKELA: The death of a 32-year-old COVID-19 positive woman on Sunday morning has left her family shaken. Her grief-stricken brother claims that she died after they failed to get ventilator support and prescribed drugs for her. The patient with breathing complications was admitted to Ispat General Hospital (IGH) on April 8 and a chest X-Ray showed her having pneumonia. The next day she tested positive for COVID-19. Even as her condition started deteriorating and she needed ventilator support, her brother Ramiz Raja alleged she was kept in the general ward with only oxygen support. Ventilators at IGH and in hospitals with COVID treatment facilities in Rourkela are fully occupied. Being young, my sister could have survived with critical care support, but that was not available, Ramiz rued.

Four contract workers die due to toxic gas leak in Odisha s Rourkela Steel Plant

Express News Service ROURKELA: Four contractual workers of Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) on Wednesday morning died after being exposed to poisonous gas at the Coal Chemical Department (CCD) where they were engaged in the maintenance operation. President of the BMS-affiliated Rourkela Ispat Karkhana Karmachari Sangh (RIKKS) HS Bal confirmed the deaths. The four were admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of Ispat General Hospital (IGH). RSP management sources informed that the workers were engaged by maintenance contractor firm Star Construction and added that at about 9 am all four were taken critically ill. They were evacuated, given first-aid inside the RSP and admitted to the RSP-run IGH for intensive care.
