Seamus Heaney Donates Papers to Library of Ireland

Seamus Heaney at the National Library of Ireland. Photo by Lar Boland. By Molly Ferns, Editorial Assistant The National Library of Ireland has become the new home to Nobel Laureate Seamus Heaney’s collection of literary papers. “I’m overwhelmed at the number of people that the library has brought in to celebrate this moment and I’m deeply indebted and deeply honoured,” said Heaney at a reception held in the reading room of the National Library on December 21. Among  those who attended the event was Taoiseach Enda Kenny who said it was a privilege for the Irish nation to receive the archives of  “one of the world’s foremost word sculptors.”

Oxfam Trailwalker in training: Getting back on the horse

I’m one of about 1000 Kiwis in training for the Oxfam Trailwalker, New Zealand’s largest team endurance event, in which teams of four tackle either 100 kilometres or 50 kilometres within time limits. The event is taking place in New Plymouth in March, but looking at my Garmin app, I did – gasp – very few training walks in December. However, since talking to Fiona Ross of Rampage Fitness, I feel all is not lost. “The first thing I would say is just do something,” she said. Don’t listen to your inner critic, she advises – do with what you can, especially if you re tired or if you re a woman approaching your monthly go-slow.

Print History: Abhijit Gupta- Book History in India

Abhijit Gupta is one of the leading practitioners of book history in twenty-first century India. He looks back at the work done in the past twenty years and considers the challenges ahead in a conversation with Murali Ranganathan When did you realise that you had evolved into a book historian from a professor of English literature? How did the evolution happen? It happened the other way around. I started teaching in an English department in 1999 and prior to that I had completed a PhD during 1994-96 on the publishing histories of some women novelists in late 19th-century England. But when I started my doctoral research in 1994, I was not even aware that a discipline called book history existed. So you could say that this was a classic instance of speaking prose without knowing it.
