PORTLAND, Ore. With the temperature topping 90 degrees, Rontoms in Southeast Portland was buzzing with activity Friday afternoon. I thought twice about walking over here so I got a Lyft cause it s really hot, said Fiona Johnson. But it s not too hot yet. Tomorrow it ll be a little worse so I think we may try to hide in the AC.
If Johnson and her friends do venture out again over the weekend, Rontoms will be open. Management is banking on misters and plenty of shade on the patio as a draw for people trying to beat the heat. Then, of course, there is always the spacious inside of the popular bar, although capacity is still limited.

Aslockton Hall Nursing Home residents celebrates 101st birthday with special wish

Covid restrictions led to a very different celebration for a care home resident on her 101st birthday.
Restricted visiting arrangements and social distancing meant a family party, like the one she had for 100th birthday, was not possible for Hilda Gunn, who lives at Aslockton Hall Nursing Home.
Hilda was born in Nuneaton, Warwickshire, and as a young woman served in the Womenâs Auxiliary Air Force as a meteorological observer for five years.

After leaving, Hilda trained as a teacher at a college in Bedford and went on to teach for a total of 30 years across three junior schools.
A social media campaign showing a number of local women wearing face masks bearing the message In My Own Write proved an effective way of marking the publication of a new book which is the culmination of a series of creative writing and photography which took place last year,
Dr Laurence McKeown, Playwright, writer, and Coordinator of the project, explained: In My Own Write is a book of poetry and prose which arose out of a series of creative writing & photography workshops for women-only. The aim of the workshops was to encourage participants to artistically express their thoughts, feelings, views and observations on the themes of home, place, identity, borders and boundaries - whether geographical, social, emotional, or psychological.
