Ray Aguilera remembered by family, friends for dedication to Bessemer

Ray Aguilera was sitting next to an elementary school student from Pueblo s Bessemer neighborhood at a Colorado Rockies baseball game when he gave him a few dollars to grab a hot dog from the concession stand.
It was his annual trip to Denver, when he chartered buses and brought dozens of students to a game as a reward for learning vocabulary, oftentimes exposing them to the delight of Coors Field and the state’s capital city for the first time: the smell of freshly cut grass, the aroma of stadium food and the tradition of the seventh inning stretch.
Friends say he relished the smiles on those children’s faces more than the game itself. ....

Pueblo City Council member Ray Aguilera dead at age 78

Ray Aguilera, a longtime Pueblo City Council member and fixture of the Bessemer community, died Sunday morning at age 78, surrounded by his family.
Aguilera was living with his family in Denver under hospice care since early last week. The cause of Aguilera s death is not yet known.
Aguilera served on
Pueblo City Council for more than a decade, first with two consecutive four-year terms starting in 2003 and then again from 2016 until this year. He represented District 4, which encompasses the Bessemer area.
He was devoted to those constituents, and a heroic advocate for Pueblo’s Bessemer neighborhoods, according to a statement from the city announcing his hospice care. ....

Hickenlooper pushes for Amtrak expansion, infrastructure bill during Pueblo visit

The momentum for a passenger rail service through Pueblo continued as Sen. John Hickenlooper met with local leaders at the Pueblo Union Depot Thursday morning to discuss the upcoming federal infrastructure legislation that could inject the necessary funding for the project.
This is a point in history where we’re going to make investments in our country’s infrastructure, probably the largest investment since Franklin Roosevelt, since World War II and transportation is going to be a big part of it,” Hickenlooper said, standing in front of the historic railroad cars stationed along the Arkansas River behind the depot.
We ve got this kind of once-in-a-generation investment in transportation moving ahead of us and I wanted to come look at places where we re going to make those investments. ....

Mark Aliff announces campaign for second Pueblo City Council Term

Mark Aliff is angling for a second term on Pueblo s City Council to retain the at-large council seat he has held since 2018.
As you get older, you want to make a difference in your community and you want to serve, he said. Pueblo has been so good to me and my family as a community, and it s a huge priority for me to give back. And I do that through city council.

Colorado Democrats introduce bill for new Front Range rail district

Colorado Senate president Leroy Garcia, D-Pueblo, introduced legislation Friday that would be the most noteworthy step taken to establish a passenger train system along Colorado’s Front Range after years of conversation about expanded rail service in the state.
The bill would create a rail district extending from the Wyoming border to the New Mexico border along Interstate 25, including parts of Pueblo County. A board of directors would oversee that district for the purpose of “planning, designing, developing, financing, constructing, operating, and maintaining an interconnected passenger rail system along the front range,” according to the bill text.
People talk about this in a number of different districts,” Garcia said. “They want to see high-speed passenger rail become a reality. We would all have the benefits of easing traffic of I-25 and I-70 and decreasing the carbon footprint by not having so many vehicles on the road. This is an ....
