AMHERST â On the left is a simple drawing of young Rosa McCauley, her black hair tied in bows, posed with her parents and baby brother at home in Tuskegee, Ala. On the right are pale riders in white hoods on dark horses, thundering hatred through the inky night. The question is not how these images can coexist, but why. Theyâre pages from the renowned artist and activist Faith Ringgoldâs 1999 childrenâs book âIf a Bus Could Talk: The Story of Rosa Parks.â (McCauley was Parksâs maiden name.) And theyâre as powerful an emblem as any of the divide that still cleaves the heart of American society.

Her research five years ago into what books were included in similar shows revealed there had been “no exhibition that illuminates the power of the picture book medium as a lens into the Civil Rights Movement.” This surprised her as did how relevant the content would be when the exhibit, organized by the Carle and the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, debuted in August at the Georgia museum.

The recent skirmishes along the Assam-Mizoram borders highlight the simmering tensions between the two states dating back to the Colonial era when present day Mizoram was known as Lushai Hills.
Interestingly, the border issues usually tend to get stoked up at a time when elections are on the horizon. There is absolutely no doubt that the issue is once again being used as a prop by indurate politicians and political parties in Assam with an eye on the forthcoming Assembly Election slated for April 2021.
