Southern, Middle Belt Leaders Condemn Food Blockade by Northern Food, Cattle Sellers

Deji Elumoye and Udora Orizu in Abuja The Southern and Middle Belt Leaders Forum (SMBLF) has expressed shock over recent decision of the Northern Food sellers and Cattle dealers Association preventing the members from transporting livestock and food from the north to the southern part of the country, describing it as gratuitous insult. Last week, cattle and foodstuff dealers under the aegis of the Amalgamated Union of Foodstuffs and Cattle Dealers of Nigeria, stopped supplies to the South following the Federal Government’s failure to meet their demands, which include payment of N475m compensation for destruction of lives and property during the #EndSARS protest and last month’s crisis in Shasha, Oyo State.

Food strike: Southern, Middle Belt Leaders kick over demand for compensation by cattle dealers, others Food strike: Southern, Middle Belt Leaders kick over demand for compensation by cattle dealers, others Share Southern and Middle Belt Leaders Forum (SMBLF) has condemned what it termed the outrageous financial demand as compensation from the Federal Government by the Food Sellers and Cattle Dealers Association for the damage suffered while the body was enforcing food blockade to the South-West, describing such as an assault on the sensibilities of non-Fulani in the country. The blockade, which lasted for a period of six days, had since been called off, with the association now demanding billion of naira compensation based on their produce which got rotten during the period.

Uproar Greets Appointment of Appeal Court Judges

Davidson Iriekpen writes that there have been enduring calls for withdrawal of the list of judges sent from the National Judicial Council to President Muhammadu Buhari for breaching the Federal Character principle Never in the history of Nigeria has the appointment of judges and justices for the country’s federal courts attracted so much condemnations and rejection as it has done since President Muhammadu Buhari assumed power and since Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad became the Chief Justice of Nigeria. While the country is still trying to cope with hullabaloo that followed the release of the list of 33 judges for appointment into the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court last December, another hue and cry is trailing the list of justices for the Court of Appeal sent to President Buhari for his approval by the Federal Judicial Service Commission (FJSC) and National Judicial Council.
