Husbands still seen as the experts on their household's finances

E-Mail COLUMBUS, Ohio - Men were more likely to be the spouse with the most knowledge of a couple s finances in 2016 than they were in 1992 - especially in wealthy couples, a new study suggests. Results come from a survey that interviewed the spouse in mixed-sex married couples that was identified by a household member as more knowledgeable about the household finances. In 2016, 56% of husbands were designated as most knowledgeable, up from 53% in 1992 and 49% in 1995. But among households in the top 1% of net worth, the husband was designated as the most knowledgeable in 90% of the households in 2016. Despite the progress women have made in society, there still seems to be a gender gap in who takes care of the finances, especially in wealthy households, said Sherman Hanna, lead author of the study and professor of consumer sciences at The Ohio State University.

UTSA researchers launch study to predict energy use in San Antonio neighborhoods

E-Mail (APRIL 6, 2021) Researchers at The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) are surveying households in two San Antonio zip codes, 78230 and 78202, about their energy use, mobility and chronic health conditions. Once the survey is complete, the data will be combined with cell phone GPS data to improve the ability to predict energy demand through time at the neighborhood level. Using a Transdisciplinary Teams (T2) seed grant from the UTSA Research, Economic Development, and Knowledge Enterprise (REDKE), this collaborative project is led by Wenbo Wu, assistant professor of management science and statistics. He also engaged the expertise of Eric Shattuck, head of the Institute for Health Disparities Research (IHDR) and Ying Huang, assistant professor of demography.

Can you win against automation?

We live in a world where robots increasingly build our cars, algorithms trade stocks and computers translate texts. Robotics, digitalization and artificial intelligence are transforming numerous professions. Some jobs are disappearing, while other new ones are being created. The online game The Automated Life now enables users to try out how they might survive in an increasingly automated world of work. The game was developed in the Center for Humans and Machines at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development.

Visa costs higher for people from poor countries

E-Mail IMAGE: Map of the world showing average number of days that someone has to work to be able to afford a tourist visa view more  Credit: Global Visa Cost Dataset How much do people have to pay for a travel permit to another country? A research team from Göttingen, Paris, Pisa and Florence has investigated the costs around the world. What they found revealed a picture of great inequality. People from poorer countries often pay many times what Europeans would pay. The results have been published in the journal Political Geography. Dr Emanuel Deutschmann from the Institute of Sociology at the University of Göttingen, together with Professor Ettore Recchi, Dr Lorenzo Gabrielli and Nodira Kholmatova (from Sciences Po Paris, CNR-ISTI Pisa and EUI Florence respectively) compiled a new dataset on visa costs for travel between countries worldwide. The analysis shows that on average people from North Africa and South Asia pay more than three times as much for tourist v
