More than $300 million of federal funding for Montana water projects is included in the infrastructure bill negotiated by a group of Senate Democrats and Republicans. The proposal includes funds to repair the century old St Mary Milk River system.
Up to $100 million of the Montana funding are outlined in the bill to go towards rehabilitation of the crumbling St Mary Milk River Project, a 339-mile water lifeline along Montana’s Hi-Line.
The system provides water to two tribes, several municipalities as well as recreation, wildlife habitats and irrigators.
Jennifer Patrick, Projects Manager for the Milk River Joint Board of Control says their needs have a big price tag.
Montanaâs crumbling St. Maryâs Milk River Project is set to receive $100 million from the U.S. Senateâs bipartisan $1.2 trillion infrastructure package.
All told, more than $300 million was approved Wednesday for Montana water projects by members of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee. Montana U.S. Sen. Steve Daines and two other Republicans joined Democrats in approving the expenses 13-7.
The Milk River Project is a 339-mile lifeline for Hi-Line communities. It reroutes water from the St. Maryâs River, near Browning, into the Milk, which would otherwise be incapable of servicing the two tribes and four towns along its route. In the summer, a long green belt of 120,000 farm acres skirts the Milk, dividing it from the beige burn of Montanaâs arid northern plains.

A group trying to rebuild the system that supplies much of the water to the Milk River each year talked Wednesday about how money from the latest COVID-19 relief bill might help. A major topic at the meeting of the St. Mary Rehabilitation Working Group was House Bill 632, the bill the Legislature passed to set up use of relief funds from the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan Act, or ARPA, passed by Congress and signed into law by President Joe Biden in March. The St. Mary Diversion and Conveyance Works, part of the irrigation Milk River Project and one of the first projects Bureau of Reclamation was authorized to build when it was created at the start of the last century, diverts water into the North Fork of the Milk River and supplies much in drought years almost all of the water flowing through the Milk River.
