Associated Student Government unanimously approved legislation Wednesday to relocate the Gender and Sexuality Resource Center to a house on Sheridan Road.
The current location, two rooms in Norris University Center that can hold 10 students, was the result of a compromise after the administration denied similar ASG legislation in 2003. Rainbow Alliance Senator Jo Scaletty, who authored the legislation, said the space is unacceptable given how much the LGBTQ community has grown.
“There are a lot more LGBT students on campus,” Scaletty said. “So it’s important to us that we’re able to have a bigger space to continue to build community and provide resources to queer people.”
ASG discusses relocating the Gender and Sexuality Resource Center
Rainbow Alliance introduced legislation to relocate the Gender and Sexuality Resource Center to a house on Sheridan Road in Wednesday’s Associated Student Government meeting.
Located on the third floor of Norris University Center, the GSRC serves as a safe place for LGBTQ+ students and an area for small gatherings. The current location is made up of two rooms that have a maximum capacity of 10 students. Rainbow Alliance ASG Senator Jo Scaletty, who presented the proposal, said a house would better establish and affirm the center’s place on campus.
“Ten students in the two main community rooms at one time really doesn’t provide a lot of opportunity for community building,” Scaletty said.
Breaking free from the gender binary
College is a daunting new experience for most, but for nonbinary people, it’s full of even more unique challenges and new opportunities to flourish. Photo Submitted by Hadley Causey
With a setting characterized by sororities and fraternities, hookups and competitive sports, gender defines every part of the college experience.
America’s gendered culture makes navigating college uniquely challenging for those who identify as nonbinary. Nonbinary means someone’s gender identity does not fit neatly into traditional definitions of “male” or “female.” For many nonbinary people, college is also a novel opportunity to be free and open about their true selves.
