St Irenaeus in Oakmont offering more than some fish fries during the pandemic

TribLIVE s Daily and Weekly email newsletters deliver the news you want and information you need, right to your inbox. Fish fry organizers at St. Irenaeus Catholic Church in Oakmont credit their volunteers for being able to offer a pre-covid menu and streamlined operations during the pandemic Lenten season. “We’re able to do this due to the time and dedication of the volunteers,” said event co-chair Caryn Cebulak. “People taking off their regular work to come on Fridays to help with the fish fry. We just train them as they come in. They are all parishioners. Kids do it for service hours.”

MEETING NOTES

Daughters of the American Revolution Regent Robbin Christman reported 95 wreaths were sponsored for Wreaths Across American by the local chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, which met Jan. 9 via zoom. She suggested the club continue the project another year, and asked for suggestions for other programs to support veterans. Cheryl Abernathy reported OneEighty, a women’s and children shelter, received the My Bag items and bags for children who are taken in. Since this is a continuous project, DAR members will continue to collect personal items and bags until OneEighty indicates it needs more. Suggested items to collect are stuffed animals, puzzles, books, activity books and toys.

Drought, no pub and a burnt-down store: movie changes town s luck

It has been a rollercoaster two years for residents of Beulah, Victoria. Eric Bana has made a name for himself in Hollywood but was on home turf for The Dry. Photo: 2019 Getty Images In that time, the town has seen its general store burn down, and a local drought break, received treated drinkable tap water for the first time and made international headlines when occupants of a house in the town flew a flag with Nazi symbolism on it. But it seems a new Australian film will give the town of 300 people, located four hours north-west of Melbourne, a lasting reason to smile.
