County officials determining how orders will be handled locally

Montgomery County officials will have to reissue executive orders regarding COVID-19 and reopening restrictions under a change made in Gov. Larry Hogan’s recent executive order.
County officials spent Wednesday trying to determine what authority they have after Hogan announced Tuesday that the state will loosen restrictions on restaurants and other businesses, starting Friday.
In the past, jurisdictions could individually determine what restrictions would be in place and how to reopen, if they wanted to proceed more slowly than the rest of the state. A reference in the new order Hogan issued Tuesday appears to strike that type of local control, though Hogan and other state officials say local governments will still have the same authority.

Last week, during a virtual public hearing about Maryland s rollout of COVID-19 vaccines for Latino and Black communities, two people made fun of Montgomery County Councilmember Nancy Navarro while she was speaking. The two people, a council employee and a contractor from the nonprofit Montgomery Community Media, were overheard on the Zoom call discussing Navarro s speech. I love how her accent comes out and pronounces words like she thinks they re pronounced. Like, she says represents and hologram, the woman said, according to WZDC. I heard hologram and thought that was kind of interesting, a man said while laughing. So cute, the woman responded.

Nancy Navarro of the Montgomery County Council in Maryland is urging Latino immigrants with a Spanish accent to wear it with pride and keep moving forward, after two people made fun of her accent during a virtual public hearing this week.
Navarro, an immigrant from Venezuela and the only woman on the council, was speaking Tuesday about issues pertaining to the county s unequal access to Covid-19 vaccinations for Latino and Black communities when two people could be heard mocking the way she pronounced certain words, according to WZDC, the local TV news station from NBC s sister network Telemundo in Washington, D.C.
