Barry Watkins, the CEO of Crazy Mountain Brewing Co., has changed his mind.
“But at the year-end of the pandemic, we took a step back and decided the fixed-cost overhead of the property was too much of a burden to bear,” Watkins said.
Crazy Mountain, which had occupied the space since 2015, had a short-term lease extension with its landlord and recently decided not to renew, Watkins said. The property is still up for sale.
So, the brewery will “soon” be moving out of its large facility, which was previously home to Breckenridge Brewery, and downsizing, according to the CEO. A lease for the new, smaller brewery and taproom is not finalized, he said, but the company has its sights set on a location on Colfax Avenue closer to downtown.

The former CEO of Crazy Mountain Brewing Co. is suing the company he founded in 2010.
Kevin Selvy filed a lawsuit against the Denver-based brewery on March 11, alleging that the company still owes him $21,112 in unpaid salary and other expenses years after firing him.
That amount has since increased to $37,294 due to Colorado Wage Act penalties, Selvy says in his lawsuit.
Selvy served as CEO until Crazy Mountain’s board of directors, which represents 20 or so investors who own the company, voted to replace him.
Selvy claims in his lawsuit that he was terminated on Dec. 31, 2018. Barry Watkins, the company’s CEO, disagreed with that timeline. He said he assumed the role in May 2019, at which time Selvy’s role at the company was reduced to president. Selvy’s contract expired at the end of 2019, according to Watkins.

Crazy Mountain Brewing Company might be getting a new landlord, but brewing will continue as usual, according to CEO Barry Watkins.
The Denver-based brewery’s 40,000-square-foot location at 471 Kalamath St. in Baker has hit the market for $6 million, Watkins told BusinessDen.
“Just like any other commercial building, they change hands from time to time. But it doesn’t have any effect on us,” he said.
The property is owned by 471 Kalamath LLC, which Watkins said is not affiliated with the Crazy Mountain business itself. According to property records, that entity purchased it for $3.35 million from Breckenridge Brewery in 2015, when Breckenridge moved out after two decades and Crazy Mountain moved in.
