Online gambling faces fresh restrictions

BBC News Published image copyrightGetty Images New restrictions designed to make online casino games less intensive and safer have been announced by the Gambling Commission. They include the introduction of limits on spin speeds, as well as a permanent ban on features that speed up play or celebrate losses as wins. Operators must clearly display to the player their total losses or wins. The Gambling Commission said online operators would need to implement the new rules by 31 October. The moves come in response to concern over what are known as online slot games - that is, games designed to mimic slot machines in real-life betting shops and casinos.

The National Trust debate is turning into a race to be the most offended

The National Trust has faced a barrage of criticism in recent months Credit: Getty Nothing gives you more social capital these days than being offended. It’s the trump card in all political and moral debates. Your opponents are immediately cast as the bad guy; there’s little they can do but grovel. This has led to the censorship and sanitation of public life. If we’re always in fear of offending someone’s irrational or unpredictable sensibilities, it’s better to err on the safe side, and not risk discussing contentious or tricky topics. Worse, however, offence has become a crutch for those too lazy to mount their own case. Weaponising it to win an argument is now the fashionable option of cowards.
