Federal and local authorities were working Sunday to tow away a dead gray whale that washed up on the Pacifica State Beach shore Friday afternoon, officials said.
Officials at the Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito said they received a report of a dead whale rolling in the surf at Pacifica State Beach at about 3 p.m. Friday. It was the 12th dead whale to wash up on a San Francisco Bay Area beach this year, according to authorities.
Matthew des Tombe cannot afford to lose power. He has lived on the Coastside for about a decade, and the entire time he has worked remotely.
âIf the power goes out for me â and it did â itâs kind of big a deal,â des Tombe said. âI have big meetings, important things I generally canât miss.â

The bluffs overlooking Poplar Beach are as majestic as they are protective. They act as a barrier between the water and decades-old garbage buried beneath the soil near the bluff
