SUFFOLK, Va. â Parents with preschool-aged children are being encouraged to register them now for kindergarten in the fall.
An initiative called Minus 9 to 5 â which works out of Eastern Virginia Medical School â helps connect medical professionals, parents and advocates working with early childhood matters.
Minus 9 to 5 has set up a central website to help parents in South Hampton Roads. Itâs ReadySetRegisterHR.org. On that site, parents can click on their city and it will direct them to the school districtâs page. It also offers help ordering important documents like birth certificates, which sometimes are misplaced.

CHESAPEAKE, Va. - From helping kids access internet to finding stable housing for families, Jane Dowdell has done it all. We address things like homelessness, behavioral needs [and] mental health needs, Dowdell, a school social worker with Chesapeake Public Schools, said.
Dowdell said the pandemic has been challenging. I think initially for us when we went out on the full school closure, we had a lot of kids just seemingly disappear, because virtually I think we didn t realize that a lot of people don t have access to internet, she said. We were just trying to figure out, Where have these kids gone? How can we reach them?

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. - Elizabeth City-Pasquotank Public Schools students who prefer face-to-face learning will head back to class next month.
The Board of Education voted Monday night for all ECPPS students to have the option to receive in-person instruction in Plan A starting Monday, April 12.
Board members held committee meetings Tuesday, during which members discussed the recent legislation North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper signed last week. As part of this newly signed legislation, public schools in North Carolina are required to allow all children in kindergarten through grade to receive in-person instruction in Plan A if their parents select that option for their child.

NORFOLK, Va. â Veronique Valencia is back teaching inside her Northside Middle School classroom for the first time in nearly a year.
The sixth grade English teacher has 21 years of experience and but still felt nervous Thursday as she taught her students through a camera.
The desks in her class are still empty, but thatâll change soon.
