Chris Gethardâs new film opens with the 40-year-old performing at 9am to a pancake-guzzling audience in Buffalo, New York. Truly, the life of a touring standup is not all glamour. Thatâs partly the point that Half My Life is making: it finds the New Jersey man revisiting a handful of his favourite venues, ruminating on life as a mid-career comedian, and pining for his wife and baby son back home. Between the scenes of this diary-cum-documentary, footage is spliced from the shows on the tour.
Itâs a diverting behind-the-scenes document of the peripatetic comicâs life â if not a particularly surprising one. But before then, pre-COVID-19, Gethard was on the road, touring independent comedy venues.
The upcoming comedy special “Chris Gethard: Half My Life,” due out June 1 from Comedy Dynamics, sees Gethard bring his stand-up comedy to spaces intended for pancakes, alligators and other things you wouldn’t normally associate with a comedy club.
“It’s a bunch of jokes and road footage and (I didn’t know it at the time) a chronicle of what it used to be like to do shows and go out and be social and live free and also taunt reptiles,” the comedian tweeted Tuesday.

Chris Gethard has announced that he will be releasing a comedy special/tour documentary. The special is called
Half My Life and features footage from his 2019 comedy tour. Jeff Rosenstock, Jawbreaker, Bad Moves, Mike Krol, Chris Farren, and Spowder are among the bands featured on the soundtrack. The special was directed by Kate Sweeney and will be released on streaming services including YouTube on June 1 and released as an album on June 4. Check out the trailer below.
