Santa Fa Plaza s disparate vendor rules unfair » Albuquerque Journal

(Eddie Moore/Albuquerque Journal) The two sets of COVID-safe restrictions that have been in place on the Santa Fe Plaza don’t make much sense to Navajo jeweler Patricia Anderson. And they don’t make much sense to us, either. City of Santa Fe vendors on the Plaza itself are no longer subject to social distancing and mask mandates. But literally just across Palace Avenue, artists at the Native American Artisan Portal Program have been forced to keep a COVID-19 safe distance, meaning fewer sellers allowed – even though the same crowd shops on both sides.

Marvin Martinez, a traditional potter from San Ildefonso Pueblo, wraps an item purchased Friday by Kathi Sanders of Tucson, Ariz., under the Palace of the Governors’ portal. Artists at the Santa Fe Plaza site are still forced to keep a COVID-19 safe distance, reducing the number of sellers. Nearby city vendors are not as restricted. She and other Native American artists have been anxiously awaiting the full reopening of the Native American Artisan Portal Program on the Santa Fe Plaza. Although the portal reopened June 11 – later than many businesses – it is still limiting capacity.
