As the US troops get ready to leave Afghanistan, the post-9/11 US-Pakistan relations have come full circle. The relations, which were initially touted as a strategic alliance, morphed into a transactional relationship in later years. The departure of American forces from Afghanistan could trigger a reset of the alignment which still remains set on the Afghan pivot.
American policy towards Pakistan may not change much. For the last two decades, America has viewed Pakistan purely from the Afghan prism. The Biden administration will continue with that policy approach. Despite some convergence of US-Pakistan interest in the Afghan peace process, the relations still remain largely transactional.

Pakistanis Assure Afghan Govt of Taliban’s Return to Talks
The Pakistani delegation led by special envoy Mohammad Sadiq during their two-day visit to Kabul has assured the Afghan government of the meaningful participation of the Taliban at the Istanbul summit, according to an Afghan official who met with the delegation.
Umer Daudzai, President Ghani’s special envoy for Pakistan, told TOLOnews that his Pakistani counterpart also assured them that the Taliban will agree on a reduction in violence and ceasefire with their participation at the peace summits.
The delegation pledged it will address its promises right after the announcement of a new date for the Turkey conference.
