At Brookside Rehabilitation in Webster, 51 of 58 residents test positive for COVID-19
WEBSTER  An official with Brookside Rehabilitation and Healthcare is defending its record after a recent outbreak of COVID-19 cases resulted in three deaths and an 88% positivity rate among residents.
The family-run facility on Pontiac Avenue had no positive cases since the beginning of the pandemic in March through mid-December, Felicia O Keeffe, director of nursing, said Wednesday.
But it has since had a furious spurt of positive cases, with 51 of its 58 residents testing positive the past two weeks, according to O Keeffe.
Two have since been discharged safely into the community, O Keeffe said. ....

A human portrait of four lives lost to COVID


More than 1,600 Rhode Island lives have been taken by the virus. That is often how we talk about it: in numbers. But each was more than that, a part of the state’s fabric. Today, we give the stories of four.

His name was Christos Mantsos, but everyone knew him as Tony.
That was the pizza shop he ran forever on Cranston’s Pontiac Avenue Tony’s Pizza Palace.
“He just went with it,” his daughter Tammy said. “He really was Tony.”
Tammy, a medical lab tech, is 25 and lost her dad Oct. 29 to COVID.
He was 71.
He was also dad to her sister Smaro, 28, who works at University Orthopedics, and husband to his wife of 33 years, Roula. That’s part of these stories those left behind. ....

Cranston man's rich life cut short by COVID


When Robert DeCosta II thinks of his dad, he often thinks of that picture of him in the Yankees jacket and Rotary Club hat, leaning against a fence at a youth baseball game, his fingers laced in front of him, his eyes hidden by aviator sunglasses. 
It was one of thousands of games the elder Robert DeCosta coached in his life, with some of the thousands of kids he coached in the background. That one picture says a lot about DeCosta: His love of the Yankees, first and foremost, but also his reserve and dignity, his unassuming smile, his dedication to Cranston.  ....
