Depot Museum opens 2021 Ornament available

The Sleepy Eye Herald Dispatch The Depot Museum opens for the season on Saturday, May 1, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Opening day will also be the first day the 2021 Sleepy Eye Christmas Ornament is available for purchase. To celebrate the May Day opening and ornament introduction, refreshments  will be available. Several years ago the Sleepy Eye Area Historical Society became the organization to produce the annual collectible ornament. Each year, SEAHS chooses a historical photo from the museum’s collection to feature on the ornament. For 2021 the Sleepy Eye Ornament features a 1921 photo of the Opera House, an establishment for theater and musical entertainment which occupied the second floor of the building we now know as the Palace. The building, a fixture in downtown Sleepy Eye, was erected in 1895.

George's Ballroom: A dive into music hub's history amid demolition consideration

George’s Ballroom: A dive into music hub’s history amid demolition consideration George’s Ballroom: A dive into music hub’s history amid demolition consideration By Bernadette Heier | April 14, 2021 at 10:35 PM CDT - Updated April 14 at 10:35 PM NEW ULM, Minn. (KEYC) — An iconic building once the social hub for live music and dancing, now in its deteriorating condition, is being considered for demolition. But the memories made inside will live on. In 1947, George Neuwirth opened the ballroom, the “it” place for concerts, parties and weddings, fueling New Ulm’s vibrant live music scene. “Really it was an amusement center, it was more than just a bar. Originally it had a bar and it had a bowling alley. I happened to have bowled in that bowling alley years and years ago back in the 60s,” said Kathleen Bakcer, executive director at the Brown County Historical Society.

Weeds: Missing two good friends | News, Sports, Jobs

Photo courtesy of the Fuchs family Nicole Fuchs loved farming Photo by David Buckland Dennis Sellner, in a 1991 photo exhibit. It was a tough winter here west of Sleepy Eye. I don’t mean the weather. It was soft as far as winters go. I mean the loss of two good people. As we turn toward spring, a crop will get planted. It always does. But I won’t be waving in my tractor cab to Nicole Fuchs and Dennis Sellner in theirs. Nicole and Dennis were two of my favorites, and our farming community is going to miss them.
