School psychology program gets national attention

A University of Northern Iowa professor spoke recently at a virtual Congressional briefing about a groundbreaking program she’s leading that could serve as a national model to help increase student access to mental health services, particularly in rural areas. “Anxiety and depression are certainly on the rise in the adolescent population,” said Nicole Skaar, a national expert who is also coordinator for UNI’s school psychology program. “I hear on a regular basis from principals, superintendents and teachers that this is where they are struggling. We need to get students support and help.” To address this, UNI partnered with Green Hills Area Education Area, and, later, the Prairie Lakes Area Education Area, to create a distance education program that will increase the number of school psychologists in these areas by 20% across a five-year grant period. She would watch crime dramas on TV, and it only developed her interest more. Flash forward a few years, and Magnussen is working on a project involving statistics and crime and ready for wherever the field of criminal justice takes her. Magnussen, of Vallensbaek, Denmark, recently was named the Spring 2021 Outstanding Undergraduate Student for the University of Houston-Victoria School of Arts & Sciences. Magno Guillen of Richmond was named the Outstanding Graduate Student for the school.

Nyre recognized seven University faculty members and administrators for their dedication to ensuring student success. The recipients of the President s Award for Student Service are chosen based on nominations by Seton Hall students. 2021 Award Recipients Assistant Professor, Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry A three-time graduate of Seton Hall, Antonacci was hired in 2009 after completing his postdoctoral research at the Cancer Institute of NJ where he studied pathways to sensitize radiation resistant cells to cancer treatment. He now serves as a faculty member in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry and as the director of the Undergraduate Chemistry and Biochemistry Teaching Laboratories.
