U of M will halt admissions to 12 PhD programs

U of M will halt admissions to 12 PhD programs The move is expected to help address the school s estimated budget shortfall of $166 million. Author: The University of Minnesota will not be accepting new programs into 12 PhD programs this fall as COVID-19 continues to strain the school’s budget. As first reported by the Star Tribune, the university will halt new enrollment in 12 liberal arts PhD programs, including English, history and gender, women and sexuality studies. Programs outside the College of Liberal Arts will not be affected. The move will save the university between $2 million and $4 million, the newspaper notes. But the university is facing budget shortfalls of around $166 million, according to a Board of Regents report. Of that shortfall, around $123 million comes from a loss of revenue from student housing, dining, parking and athletics.

University of Minnesota considers waiving tuition for MN families with $50K or less in annual income If approved, the plan could take effect as soon as 2021 Author: University of Minnesota officials are considering waiving tuition for Minnesota students whose families have an annual income of $50,000 or less.  The proposal, reported by the Star Tribune Wednesday, goes before the Board of Regents on Friday. It s part of President Joan Gabel s broader long-term plan, which is broken down on page 79 in the documents for Friday s meeting. The plan suggests beginning the tuition-free program by 2021.   The program would not cover the cost of boarding, supplies or student fees; it would apply only to in-state tuition, which is currently about $13,000 per year at the University s Twin Cities campus. Including student fees, that number goes up to about $15,000.
