Join us at Rancho Los Alamitos for a free family program, a reading of Waa’aka’: The Bird Who Fell in Love with the Sun by author Cindi Alvitre. Waa’aka’ is a beautiful children’s book telling the Tongva creation story of Waa’aka’, a gorgeous bird who falls in love with Tamet, the sun. The reading will be followed by an artist presentation by illustrator Carly Lake. Families will experience Tongva storytelling and hands-on art activities outdoors.
There will be two, identical presentations of this program at 10:00 AM and 11:30 AM on Sunday, August 8.

But some immigrants who come here seeking a dream realize pretty quickly that the image they had of life in the US is very different from the reality. KQED’s Chloe Veltman has the story of two men from Africa who both started graduate studies at UC Berkeley during the pandemic. That was hard enough, but they also found themselves grappling with racism in a place that’s supposed to be one of the most progressive in the world.
