Retail pot storefront gets special permit to open on Mountain Street East
The Planning Board Wednesday granted a special permit for a retail marijuana storefront on Mountain Street East.
The board unanimously approved the special permit for Munro Associates LLC at 15-17 Mountain Street East, at the corner of Burncoat Street in the city s Summit neighborhood.
The establishment will be Munro s second local storefront; the company recently opened The Vault in Webster.
Joshua Lee Smith, a lawyer with the Bowditch & Dewey firm in Worcester representing Munro on the application, said the operation plans to have a total of 45 employees, with 10 to 13 employees on shift at any point in time. The business requires seven parking spaces, but the small strip mall where the marijuana retailer will be located has 28 overall spaces.
Then & Now: Brittan Square Fire Barn, Burncoat Street, Worcester
Some called it the fire barn, a casual term that faded with the memory of horse-drawn fire equipment.
The original fire house at 19 Burncoat St. in Worcester, built in 1893 to serve the Lincoln and Burncoat streets section of the city, was mostly called the Adams Square Fire House in the early days.
And then, for reasons not clear, there was a name change: The area became Brittan Square, as it remains known.
The Brittan Square Fire Station OK, barn, for our nostalgic readers remained in service through the mid-1960s. It was rundown, having not seen significant upgrades since its horse-drawn beginnings.
