Students raise community s mental health awareness in May

Pamela Larson May is Mental Health Awareness Month. During May, the goal is to raise awareness of mental health issues, often referred to as behavioral health issues. Similarly, by focusing on mental health issues during this month, one reduces the stigma associated with mental illness. In order to raise the Racine community’s awareness of mental health, yard signs with mental health messages are on display at the Racine Unified School District middle and high schools and at several community organizations: YMCA, John XXIII Educational Center, National Alliance for Mental Health-Racine County and the Professional Services Group. The messages are:

Henry Alexander ‘Hank’ Phillips WILMINGTON Henry Alexander “Hank” Phillips, 84, died peacefully at home from complications of prostate cancer Tuesday, March 2, 2021. Hank was born July 14, 1936, in Boston, Massachusetts, to Dr. Henry Phillips Jr. and Katharine Harris Phillips and was a native of Exeter, New Hampshire. He was known as “Sandy” while growing up in Exeter, in college and during his military service. Hank graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy in 1955 with honors. He was a varsity athlete and class correspondent for 16 years. He was a director of the General Alumni/ae Association and a member of the school’s Heritage Circle. Hank earned a B.A. Degree in Liberal Arts, majoring in French literature, from Haverford College, Haverford, Pennsylvania, in 1959. He was a member of Haverford’s Beta Rho Sigma Society and Jacob P. Jones Society. He captained varsity cross-country teams at Exeter and Haverford. He attended Camp Mowglis on Newfound Lake in Hebron

SMART goal setting for teens

Pamela Larson Today’s teens are pulled in many directions from school, extracurricular activities and work to family and friends. Oftentimes, it is challenging to balance all the demands and expectations placed upon them. Some teens experience frustration because they feel that they work hard and see little results from all their efforts. Goal setting enables teens take action to get positive results, focus on what is important to them and build their self-confidence. At one time or another, we have set goals for different reasons. Some of us have been more successful in reaching those goals than others. Goals that are realistic and clearly defined are more likely to be achieved. To increase the likelihood that a goal is accomplished, there is a method that teens (and adults) can use to define their goal and know exactly when it has been obtained. This method is the SMART goal setting method.
