Bob Satchwell, award-winning local newspaper editor turned doughty defender of press freedom – obituary Telegraph Obituaries © PA Bob Satchwell as editor of the Cambridge Evening News in 1997 - PA Bob Satchwell, who has died aged 73 after developing pneumonia and Covid-19, was founding executive director of the Society of Editors (SoE), which has more than 450 members in all media sectors, and a doughty campaigner against attempts by the powerful to place statutory limits on press freedom. Satchwell’s career took him from the Lancashire Evening Post, where he was voted Journalist of the Year in the 1977 British Press Awards, to Fleet Street as assistant editor of the News of the World where he gained a somewhat cynical view of politicians who “bang on about newspaper inaccuracy, sometimes complaining loudly about stories they know to be true. yet fight to get their own words on the leader pages”.
