The San Diego County Sheriff s Department presented a Medal of Distinguished Service to a six-year-old girl for her heroic act. In this Zevely Zone, I went to Ramona where Kallie Helton is the talk of the town. RESPECT program s new San Marcos center offers fun, games for at-risk youth

SAN MARCOS    There’s a big room tucked on the backside of a government building in San Marcos that’s ready for use when the pandemic restrictions lift. Billiard balls on the new table are racked. The 75-inch TVs are in. A drum kit sits in a sound-proof booth. All that’s missing are the select group of a few dozen at-risk teens who’ve earned the privilege to use the new facility, where they can engage in a little healthy competition at pool or foosball, save virtual worlds on a Playstation 5 or record music on a high-end set. The 7,000-square-foot site was four years and $600,000 in the making, and it marks the next and biggest step for an afterschool program dubbed RESPECT. The name of the program is an acronym: responsibility, ethics, service, perseverance, education, courage and trustworthiness.
