The Dominica Film Challenge, a Discover Dominica organized event is underway, with six teams of the most talented videographers from around the world, traversing the island. The six teams arrived on island on Saturday and attended a brief welcome ceremony at the Anchorage Hotel. On Sunday, the teams attended orientation and then were treated to a Whale-watching excursion.
The Discover Dominica Authority is encouraging Dominicans to follow the weeklong exploits and adventures of the teams this week, as they seek to capture and share unique photos of the islands breathtaking sites, sounds, and people.

On May 16, 1851, Evergreen was founded in a hillside over what is now the intersection of Babcock Boulevard and Peoples Road in Ross Township. The hamlet, which claimed to be the world’s first suburb, was home to a small, self-sustaining utopian society that offered its elite residents an escape from the noise and smoke of Pittsburgh.
The founders envisioned 16 families living, working and building their community together. They made plans to build stables, orchards, cow pastures and a school for their children.
However, the secluded utopia failed under the weight of strict rules that governed its residents. Left behind were four Gothic Revival, cottage-style homes. One of these is the Hill-McCallam-Davies house, known as Rosehill. The first lady donated the hat shown to support the organization s 1955 fundraiser. Powers money went toward restoring the Vancouver Barracks Officers Quarters. In 1955, Mamie Eisenhower’s hat rested on many Vancouver women’s heads. The Clark County Historical Museum has the photos to prove it.
All this began simply enough with a ladies’ hat exchange by the Soroptimist Club of Vancouver to raise money for restoring the Vancouver Barracks Officers’ Quarters.
