James Craig s possible run thrills Michigan GOP Detroiters, not so much

DETROIT  Retiring Detroit Police Chief James Craig has not declared himself a candidate, but Republican Party insiders say his “law and order” bona fides would make him a formidable challenger against Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer next year. Since 2013, Craig has presided over one of the most violent and liberal cities in the country one hit hard by COVID-19, which he contracted last year as his department enforced Whitmer orders. Although he has no elected experience, Craig could enter the race as the presumed frontrunner among Republicans, including activists who believe COVID regulations were too strict, crime rates are too high and the 2020 election was rigged.

Unfortunately, it falls short of freedom,” said Nakia Wallace, a co-founder of Detroit Will Breathe.

Detroit activists celebrate guilty verdict in George Floyd slaying but say their work is far from over

Detroit activists celebrate guilty verdict in George Floyd slaying but say their work is far from over Updated 9:05 PM; Facebook Share DETROIT, MI Kenya Fentress cried as she waited to hear whether a jury’s decision would provide justice in the murder of George Floyd. Fentress, a Detroit Black woman who has experienced police injustice in her hometown, described the moment as overwhelming. Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin was found guilty of second- and third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter just under a year after he was recorded on video pinning Floyd to the ground until he died. Fentress said she believes Chauvin wouldn’t have been charged if the country wasn’t able to watch Floyd die over the nine minutes and 29 seconds caught on camera. The video was damning, she said, but police brutality against Black people still continued in the year since Floyd’s death.
