Health officials have denied the existence of a Nepal variant of Covid-19 following reports a new mutant strain may have been detected in the UK. The World Health Organisation said they have no knowledge of any new variant originating in the Himalayan nation after reports the UK’s SAGE committee is concerned by the mutation. The Daily Mail claimed a Nepal variant could threaten foreign holidays to destinations such as Portugal, as the new vaccine-resistant variant may have been detected there and in other European countries.

On Monday, Dr. Rajeev Shrestha watched as a 24-year-old patient deteriorated, then died in emergency care. His Covid-19 results had just come back positive earlier that day, after his mild flu-like symptoms began to worsen abruptly.
“We couldn’t do anything,” said Shrestha, a physician and professor at Dhulikhel Hospital and Kathmandu University Hospital.
In Nepal, which shares a long and porous border with India, Covid-19 cases are surging. As bad as official numbers are, the reality is likewise worse. Testing, particularly in rural areas, is limited, according to Dr. Aban Gautam, president of the aid organization Mountain Heart Nepal.

Kathmandu, Jun 3 (PTI) Nepal on Thursday rejected a UK tabloid report claiming the emergence of a Nepal variant of coronavirus, categorically denying its existence in the country and urging all not to spread such disinformation.
UK tabloid Daily Mail on Wednesday published a story, saying a coronavirus variant that is being linked to Nepal has been found in more than 20 people in the UK and is a mutated version of the strain identified in India.
Experts have alerted ministers to the new virus which has apparently also spread to several European countries, the tabloid said in a report.
