LINCOLN, Neb. On Wednesday, March 31, the National Ag Statistics Service released the report on 2021 Prospective Plantings. The report, based on survey responses from agricultural producers, indicates a significant increase in sorghum acres planned for Nebraska in 2021.
In 2020, Nebraska’s sorghum acres totaled 195,000 acres. Per the NASS report, Nebraska will see an increase of 105,000 acres, bringing total acres planted for grain sorghum to 300,000 acres; Up 54% from the previous year. This increase is largely due to rallying market prices for sorghum. Many bids in the state for 2021 crop are $1 per bushel or more over corn, and even higher in states adjacent to Nebraska. The price of corn is used as a benchmark reference point for sorghum, since sorghum is not traded on the Chicago Board of Trade.
2 months ago in Agriculture Photo: WNAX Nebraska Sorghum Growers Association members held a virtual meeting with Nebraska Congressman Adrian Smith and Staff of Representative Don Bacon this week. Association Executive Director Nate Blum says one of the concerns for sorghum growers and many in agriculture is how they’ll be impacted by the Biden administration’s move to climate change. Blum says there are opportunities for sorghum to be a solution for environmental sustainability.
He says sorghum is in a better position than other crops to capture carbon which is critical in enhancing the climate.
Blum says trade was also a big part of their virtual discussions with Congressman Adrian Smith and Representative Don Bacon’s staff members.
Before leaving town, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue and U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer announced the appointment of 67 members to serve on seven agricultural trade advisory committees. A complete list of committee members are available at fas.usda.gov/atacs and includes a who’s who of influential voices from commodity groups to agribusinesses.
The Agricultural Policy Advisory Committee is comprised of senior representatives from across the U.S. agricultural community who provide advice to USDA and USTR on trade policy matters including the operation of existing trade agreements and the negotiation of new agreements. Members of the six Agricultural Technical Advisory Committees provide technical advice and guidance from the perspective of their specific product sectors. This group of appointed advisors will serve until 2025.
