Rich Queenslanders fume old junk houseboats in Noose spoil their multi-million-dollar views

Owners of waterfront mansions in one of Australia s most picturesque locations are furious their million-dollar views are being spoiled by old junk houseboats. In most Queensland waterways there are significant fees for mooring large vessels, but on the glamorous Noosa River houseboat owners are able to anchor free of charge thanks to a state government loophole. Locals say there are now about 200 run-down boats clotting the river and making the famous destination look like an eyesore . Construction underway for busy Tewantin intersection

Works to fix Tewantin s busiest intersection are expected to begin in late 2021 as part of a $9.8m bypass upgrade. The intersection upgrade of Cooroy-Noosa Road and Beckmans Road will include a new two-lane roundabout to improve traffic flow, particularly during peak periods. Noosa Council is delivering the project with the Department of Transport and Main Roads as part of the $400 million road stimulus package funded by the Queensland Government to supercharge the State s economy through the COVID-19 recovery. Earlier this month, Noosa Mayor Clare Stewart said the design work had identified the alignment of the junction between the two roads, allowing vegetation clearing and relocation of energy and water infrastructure to start.

Cr Stewart, who has never held previous public office, narrowly deposed incumbent Tony Wellington for the top job, largely on her new broom approach and a promise to listen and respond more to community and business needs. Not a woman in sight – the first Noosa Shire Council in 1910 was as blokey as they come. This was after the Wellington Council had become tainted with the jailing of long-serving councillor Frank Pardon and the public outrage that erupted around former councillor Jess Glasgow s behaviour on TV reality show The Bachelorette. Mr Pardon, who has since lost his appeal on historical charges of indecent treatment of a child, was forced to resign while Mr Glasgow failed to win re-election last March.

Start on new Peregian hub to generate jobs

But on Wednesday he joined Noosa Mayor Clare Stewart and Member for Wide Bay Llew O Brien to inspect the progress of a $10m upgrade providing about a stack of new construction jobs at what was once the derelict Peregian Beach Bowls Club site. To see Kane Construction contractors on site, and all the fencing site up - they ve made a fair amount of progress despite all the wet weather, Mr Hare said. It s exciting to see another milestone has been achieved. The facility will provide greater flexibility in meeting the demand for hiring space and we hope it will become a central focus of Peregian Beach.
