We now have a collectively bargained agreement,’ Unite NW-54 Branches Communities Rep Sam Harvey told News Line yesterday at a rally to celebrate the bus drivers huge victory outside Manchester’s Queen’s Road Bus Depot after winning their indefinite strike.
‘This is a massive victory for the striking bus strikers, for Unite the union, and for every working class person.
‘It goes to show that, if you stand together and have the determination, you can make an industrial giant concede.’
Schaeffer to be awarded honorary doctorate at WT spring commencement

CANYON Prominent regional businessman and philanthropist Stanley Schaeffer will be awarded an honorary doctorate on Saturday by his alma mater, West Texas A&M University.
Schaeffer will be presented an honorary doctorate of business administration during the second of three outdoor, in-person commencement ceremonies at Buffalo Stadium on WT’s Canyon campus. WT will host commencement ceremonies at 9 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. Saturday in Buffalo Stadium.
“Stanley has been central to the shaping of the Texas Panhandle’s University, West Texas A&M,” said President Dr. Walter Wendler. “His values and vision align with the long-range plan, WT 125, and we are grateful for his commitment and contributions. PUBLIC transport bosses have dropped a “fire-and-rehire” attack on 400 Manchester bus workers, a May Day rally in support of the strikers was told today.
The nine-week strike action against public transport giant Go Ahead will continue until the strikers vote on a new deal proposed by bosses, the strikers’ union representative from Unite told the rally.
Hundreds of trade unionists and campaigners marched from Manchester city centre to the strikers’ picket line and rally two miles away despite pouring rain and bitter cold.
Unite branch secretary Colin Hayden told the rally after the march: “Today marks the start of the 10th week of our industrial action against fire and rehire. Our members decided they will not stand for the industrial terrorism of fire and rehire.
