What s Open, Closed For Memorial Day 2021 In Alexandria Patch 2 hrs ago Emily Leayman © Emily Leayman/Patch The Captain Rocky Versace Plaza and Vietnam Veterans’ Memorial outside the Mount Vernon Recreation Center is one memorial honoring those who have died serving in the military. ALEXANDRIA, VA As Memorial Day approaches, families will celebrate the unofficial start of summer. That means backyard cookouts, vacations, or simply enjoying the three-day weekend. Memorial Day is also a time to remember those who have died while serving in the military. There does not appear to be a Memorial Day Ceremony scheduled in 2021. The ceremony is typically held at the Captain Rocky Versace Plaza and Vietnam Veterans’ Memorial outside the Mount Vernon Recreation Center. The memorial is dedicated to Captain Rocky Versace, a posthumous Medal of Honor recipient, and the 66 other Alexandrians who died while serving during the Vietnam War.

Casper City Council Looks at Raising Recreation Fees

Casper City Council Looks at Raising Recreation Fees The Casper City Council will consider raising some of the fees at its indoor and outdoor recreation facilities. Tim Cortez, the city s director of parks and recreation, told the city council at its pre-meeting on Tuesday that the department has not raised facilities fees for four or five years. We just can t kick the can down the road anymore, Cortez said. The fee increases would be phased in over one year to three years to soften the blow to the users of the facilities, he said. The fee increases would follow a pay to play model that would have the users pay their fair share and lessen the burden on the city s general fund, Cortez said.

Lakeway residents, including Mayor Sandy Cox, say more public swimming pools needed in the area

When Lakeway resident Christopher Levy was a teen in the Houston area, he said he’d frequent his neighborhood pool at The Woodlands Athletic Center, spending long, summer afternoons getting exercise and visiting with friends. His family’s life centered around the facility, with his mother serving as a judge for diving competitions. “It was just one of the few things that you could do in the summer that you weren’t miserable (due to the heat),” Levy said. “I made a lot of friendships there.” After moving to Lakeway, Levy said he was struck by the city’s lack of a community pool, forcing him to shelter from the heat at the lake or public swimming holes.
