KARACHI: Calling for a new agreement to ensure fair and equitable distribution of irrigation water among provinces, the ruling Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) on Monday announced a protest campaign across Sindh for the province’s due share in water. It warned that if the federal government and Punjab continued to ignore Sindh’s stance, the entire country could face a devastating impact of water shortage on its agricultural produce by the end of this year.

Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar has proposed deployment of ‘independent observers’ at Punjab and Sindh barrages.
Punjab Chief Minister has also invited parliamentarians from all over the country, especially from Sindh, to visit Punjab barrages. He said the visiting lawmakers will be provided with accurate data of water emission.
In a statement on Sunday, the chief minister said that this initiative will help in the ‘equitable distribution’ of water among the provinces. And it will also help in clearing the misunderstandings between the provinces on the water issue.
The observers will monitor the current water scarcity, water distribution and discharge reporting system in the province themselves.

KARACHI: The Sindh Assembly on Monday witnessed a stormy session as ruling Pakistan People Party vehemently condemned the federal government for cutting down Sindh’s water share in violation of the 1991 Water Accord through a strong-worded resolution that was opposed by the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf, saying the PPP created an artificial shortage by favouring its “blue-eyed waderas”.
Major opposition parties in the provincial assembly Grand Democratic Alliance and Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan which are coalition partners of the PTI-led federal government, however, supported the resolution tabled by Irrigation Minister Sohail Anwar Sial.

Despite emerging as the largest party in the Upper House, the PTI suffered a defeat at the hands of PDM’s Yusuf Raza Gilani who managed to get the Islamabad general seat from PTI’s Hafeez Sheikh. Gilani’s victory was a shocker for the PTI government, forcing PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari to triumphantly tweet: “Democracy is the best revenge. Jeya Bhutto!”
Gilani got 169 votes against Sheikh’s 164. Seven votes were rejected. Votes were counted twice - second time at the request of government legislators.
