We all know that ‘Saat Hindustani’ marked Amitabh Bachchan’s debut in Bollywood. But did you know that Tinnu Anand was the one who had passed it on to him when he didn’t want to do it? You see, he had his sights set on film direction and didn’t want to pass the opportunity to assist Satyajit Ray, his father Inder Raj Anand’s friend. What followed was a career as a director, which then eventually brought him back to acting. In ETimes’ #BigInterview this week, we spoke to the director, who’s a writer’s son, and now prefers facing the camera to wielding a megaphone. Over to him.

Noisy Brood X periodical cicadas that remained underground for 17 years are emerging by the trillions now that ground temperatures are soaring over 17 degrees Celsius in North America. Haikuists have to clamor quickly to mark this generation in 17 syllables. Soil warms earlier because of climate change. Before 1950, cicadas used to emerge at the end of May; now they’re already singing. Matsuo Basho (1644-1694) experienced both rain and insect songs in Yamagata Prefecture.

Connecting . . . shot their parts on iPhones from their actual homes, peppered with a few props. The laundry room in the show is actor Parvesh Cheena s actual laundry room. The pink kettle in the kitchen is the actual kettle he bought on Amazon. He refers to the downstairs of his townhome as the set, and his bedroom upstairs has served as his dressing room. His partner, Eric, even had a small cameo in the show as a delivery person. His character Pradeep is, mostly, a reflection of Cheena s real life. Right now, I am enjoying the fact that people can just be who they are. And we don t have to talk about how spicy my dosa is or something, he says. This is also the closest character to my real life except I don t have children.
